103rd Cactus Division
  PFC HAROLD B. (JUNIOR) EMERY, Jr - (DOW)
411th    G  Company

Born 6/22/1924, Junior's own father called him to go to war! His father was a member of the Selective Service Board Two of York County. On February 24, 1943 Junior was only eighteen years old when he was inducted into the Army at the Induction Center in Portland, Maine.

Junior Emery began his training in antiaircraft at Camp Hulen, Texas. Later he was enrolled in the Army Specialized Training Program Engineering Course at Oklahoma A & M College in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Before he could finish his training there, the Army sent him for infantry training at Camp Howze in Texas. While he was there Junior continued to do his best and make his friends and family proud of him. He was awarded the Good Conduct badge, Sharp Shooting badges, and an Expert Infantryman badge. He was in charge of the Browning automatic rifle (BAR) in his squad.

Junior's last trip home was in May, 1944.   He knew he would be heading into war soon. He visited with his family and friends. As he was saying his good-byes, they all warned him, "Keep your head down, Bub!" He replied, "I'll try, but I'm so tall that I'll probably be a good target!"

In December 19, 1944, Junior was struck in the head by shrapnel from an artillery tree burst. He was sent to the Army 46th General Hospital in France where they could care for him. Doctors performed two delicate operations. They wanted to send him to a hospital in England for more professional doctors that could help, but he died of his wounds (DOW) on January 12, 1945.

In October of 1953, the people of Limington, Maine gathered to dedicate their new school to his memory;
