- My father told me that he was a driver for the platoon
leader in the
intelligence/recon platoon.
- He said their main jobs were to
coordinate
intelligence and communications between the battalions,
- and observe German positions to guide artillery attacks. He joined the 409th as
a
replacement at the end
- of January, 1945, and served with them until the
end of the war.
After the 103rd was disbanded, my father was transferred to the 47th
Regiment of the 9th Division at Dachau,
- near Munich. He had made
Sergeant by that time, and he was placed in charge of a platoon that
helped
- oversee the former concentration camp. He was transferred
once
more before finally coming home and
- being discharged on June 14, 1946.
By the way, you have my permission to use any of this information on the
web site as you see fit. You can
- list me as the contact person.
Thank
you for putting together such a nice site in honor of the men that
served their country in the 103rd.
All the best,
Joe Newhouse
P.S. My father's birth date was 2/14/26, in case you need it.
