103rd Cactus Division

George Bahorich

The first picture is of George Bahorich in uniform with some of his family in 1945.

The second one is from Thanksgiving 2002.  He is in the center surrounded by his children and grandchildren.
(He's had two more grandchildren since then.)
He was drafted out of high school in Des Plaines, Illinois.
He then began his basic training at Blanding in Florida near Jacksonville, for about 3 months.
After that he attended Radio School in Fort Benning, GA.
Then he was sent to Camp Houze, TX assigned to the 103rd infantry division.

He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion of the 409th Regiment. He was in two companies within the Battalion,
first a rifleman with E Company, then Ammo and Pioneer for the HQ Company.
He was promoted to Platoon Sergeant by the end of the war.

He went to college on the GI Bill, was in ROTC, played college football, and received an invitation from
George Halas to try out for the Chicago Bears. During the Korean War he was called back to active duty
as an officer, and stationed in Augsburg Germany with the 28th Infantry Division for one year.
After that he taught school for a few years, then worked for AT&T as a manager for the rest of his career.

He never told war stories when we were growing up. I think he wanted to forget the whole thing.
When my oldest brother was a child, he asked him if he ever killed anyone. My father replied, "Naw,
we used to just shoot over their heads."

He is now living in Kansas City during the warmer months, and Mesa, AZ during the winter. He recently
celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary with his wife, Patti, 5 children, their 5 spouses, and 12 grandchildren.

His Email address is geopat5@juno.com.
