103rd Cactus Division

Leon L. Hurd was born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on September 24, 1924.  He was born to Jennie C. Hurd and Roy B. Hurd.  Leon was raised in Sioux Falls and attended Washington High School.  He began work at Morrells Packing Company on February 1, 1943 and continued to work there until he joined the armed forces on May 14, 1943. 

He was inducted in the military service on at Fort Crooks, Nebraska.  He was transferred to the Reserve Corps and reported for active duty on May 14, 1943 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.  He trained at Camp Santa Anita and Camp Ord, California, and Camp Bowie, Texas. On August 28, 1944 he was sent overseas.  He joined the 409^th, Company B on January 23^rd, 1945 and was killed in action on March 23, 1945 near Reisdorf, Germany.  His death occurred in the line of duty.
